“compound: something formed by combining parts, elements, or ingredients”

How It Started

Hi there – I’m Jess! I am an industrial designer and the founder of Compound. As someone with a background in environmental science, I became interested in the world of DIY materials where anyone could learn to make safe, compostable biomaterials at home.

While collecting material “recipes”, I realized that most of them were either overly simplistic or bogged down with scientific jargon. There were few resources that shared this knowledge in a simple yet informative way.

My goal is to create accessible knowledge for everyone.
What You’ll Find Here

A recipe blog, but for materials

Compound is the resource I wish I had when I was teaching myself how to make biomaterials.

Borrowing from the world of food bloggers, Compound is a recipe blog but for materials. Feel free to use these materials in whatever way you like and tweak them to make your perfect recipe.

What We’re Building

Our dream is for everyone to have the knowledge they need to turn locally available waste streams into new materials and projects.

This project was greatly inspired by open-source material-based platforms such as Materiom and the Precious Plastic movement.

I hope you’ll join us
